A password-protected directory or area is a folder which could be accessed only when a username and a password are typed in, so no unauthorized people may view its content. This feature could be used for the main folder of a certain website or just for a certain subfolder based upon your requirements. As an example, if you are developing a new Internet site and you don't want people to see it before it is 100% ready, you need to prohibit the access to it as a whole, while if you need only some people to be able to access certain files, you'll be able to password-protect only a particular folder, while the remaining portion of the Internet site could be seen by everybody. Either way, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear when the login details the visitor types in aren't right. Even a direct link to a file will not work if any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Web Hosting

Creating a password-protected area shall take merely several mouse clicks and a few seconds if you host your websites within a web hosting account with us. You will not have to do anything difficult - you will have to choose a domain/subdomain, to choose which folder under it has to be protected, and then to type in the login name and password which will be used to access that folder. In case a number of individuals require their own login details, there won't be a problem to set up several different usernames with access to the same exact folder. All protected folders will appear with a padlock icon inside the File Manager section, so you shall always know where this option is enabled. If you'd like to turn off the security function for any folder, you can deactivate it from the same exact section of the CP where you have enabled it.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with our company, you'll be able to protect any content you have uploaded through our protection tool. Its interface is as basic and intuitive as that of the Hepsia Control Panel it is a part of, so you will not need to enter any code at any time. You'll only need to choose one of the domains/subdomains which you have in the web hosting account and to select which folder should be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. After that you can input the username and the password, that'll be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you will be ready. The protection will be turned on right away, so anybody who tries to access the freshly protected folder shall have to type in the correct login information. In cases where a number of individuals must be able to access the same content, you could make a separate username for each one.
