SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol which is used to connect to a web server and conduct various tasks using a command line. The protocol is popular with many knowledgeable users, as the information transmitted over it is encrypted, so it can't be intercepted on the way by a 3rd party. SSH access can be employed for a number of things with regards to the type of website hosting account. With a shared hosting account, in particular, SSH is one of several ways to import/export a database or to upload a file if the web server allows for it. If you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH could be used for virtually anything - you could install software or restart specific services like the web server or the database server which run on the machine. SSH is employed mainly with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that permit you to use the protocol if your computer is using a different OS as well. The connection is made on TCP port 22 by default and the remote server always listens for incoming connections on that port although many providers change it for security reasons.

SSH access is featured with all web hosting that we provide. With some of them, it is provided by default, while with others it's an additional upgrade that you can include with several mouse clicks in your hosting Control Panel. You can obtain SSH access through the section dedicated to it where you will also find the info which you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You could choose the password that you shall use and, if needed, you'll be able to change it with a couple of clicks from the same location. All of the commands that could be used with our shared plans are listed inside a help article alongside relevant examples. If the SSH access function is permitted for your account, you shall also be able to upload files using your preferred FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers

SSH access is included as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you are able to add it through the hosting Control Panel if required - even just for the current month. Either way, you could activate and de-activate the feature with one click from the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same location, you will see the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You shall also find a box where you could type the password that you'd like to use, as it does not have to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better protection, you can also change it as frequently as you need. The full list of the commands that can be performed inside a semi-dedicated account is supplied in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and a few instances. An extra feature after SSH access is enabled will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client that supports this type of connections.
